The Real Green Revolution

By Meredith H.Luce MS, RD, LD/N

As a Registered Dietician for three decades, I’ve seen weight loss counseling shift from a focus on calories to nutrient manipulation to the current “eat more to lose more” trend. The truth is, we really can’t afford to eat any more! It’s not just expensive and unhealthy, it’s also selfish and horrible for the planet!

Bodies want normal quantities of balanced nutrients at regular intervals. They don’t respond well to being over-stimulated from grazing; overstretched from excessive food; and overworked from constant digestion. At a certain point, they just give out! How long it takes for that to happen is a different question – our expanding waistlines prove that the human form can be pushed pretty far before it stops working. But eventually, overweight bodies will do just that.

The planet is no different. As the Earth’s inhabitants consume more and more, tearing our way through its natural resources and leaving billions of plastic water bottles and brutal factory farms in our wake, we’re seeing the detrimental effect of our habits. The environment is changing – and not for the better! Fewer and fewer of us consume more and more of our planet’s offerings and give off a vast preponderance of the pollution. And that’s just for starters!

How does all of this global consciousness relate to your diet, you ask? The answer is simple.

Eating smaller quantities of a wide variety of foods not only helps you to maintain nutritional balance, optimize digestion and lose pounds (then maintain your ideal weight), it takes stress off the planet in the only way each of us can – individually. Contrary to what all this green-friendly talk may’ve led you to think, you don’t need to start an organic vegetable garden in your backyard to make a difference (who has time for that anyway?)! Eating less, buying ethically conscious meats and unprocessed foods when you can and cutting your bottled water consumption are three easy ways to help lessen your carbon footprint while improving the way you look and feel!

Of course just as it will take time and effort to reverse – or at least slow – the effects of over-consumption on the planet, if you have gained and lost weight many, many times, your body needs time to change as well. Your extra fat cells are sending out the wrong chemical messages. Your digestive enzymes are not switched on. And more than likely, you are drowning your body with water it doesn’t really need. Diet Directives has been tested and evolved over two decades so that its new program is simple, painless and guaranteed to have you eating “like a thin person” in a just a few weeks. Plus, in addition to all the benefits of losing weight and looking fabulous, you’ll be doing the earth – and your bank account – a service in the process! Remember, the real Green Revolution starts with your body!
